Some of the sights visited on the tours include the Munch Museum, the National Gallery, the Opera House, the Viking Ship Museum, the Vigeland Park and more. If you are taking a Baltic cruise in the coming years, these tours are a great alternative to the mass market tours offered by the cruise lines.

Hermitage Museum - Amsterdam or St. Petersburg?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 161px; height: 161px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_TUVGCWc8Zsc/SwcApxAuu3I/AAAAAAAAAE0/axxi0IYZK9M/s320/St_P_Hermitage.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5406290595212606322" />
One of the most popular museums in the world is the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. The museum's collection has more than 3,000,000 (yes that's 3 million) pieces. They have such a large collection that more pieces are in storage than are on display. Have too much art? Why not open a new museum? That's exactly what has happened. Starting this year the Hermitage has opened a satellite museum in Amsterdam. Every six months a new collection will premiere in Amsterdam. Just recently opened, it has already become one of the most popular museums in Amsterdam. So if you are going to Russia or the Netherlands and would like a private tour at the Hermitage, please let us know.

Berlin Wall came down 20 Years Ago!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 161px; height: 161px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_TUVGCWc8Zsc/SvnoPZTZwmI/AAAAAAAAAEs/pHYTcpUrcR8/s320/Berlin_Brandenberg_Gate.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402604579195568738" />On November 9, 1989 the Berlin Wall came down. This week Berliners are celebrating that anniversary. The wall was 96 miles in length and created a city within the city. People living inside the wall (West Berlin) were not permitted to see their friends or family who lived outside the wall (East Berlin) for nearly 30 years. During that period 136 people were killed trying "break-in" to the free west.

Today, sites associated with the Berlin Wall have become popular tourist attractions. Those sites include Check Point Charlie, the Wall Museum, Brandenburg Gate and the East Side Gallery (a one mile stretch of the wall that remains and is used for murals). You can find these sites on a private shore trip from the port of Warnemunde / Rostock. Also, if you wish, we can arrange for a border crossing guard to provide an Authentic East German Stamp in your Passport.

Please let us know if we can be of assistance in planning your private tours to Berlin.

Visiting Vatican City

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 161px; height: 161px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_TUVGCWc8Zsc/SvSK7wgHbHI/AAAAAAAAAEc/LoZQZ2mjjik/s320/Rome_St_Peters_Square.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401094612360588402" />
Many clients who are visiting Rome as part of a shore excursion ask if they can make a short stop at the Vatican just to see the Sistine Chapel. Unfortunately this is not possible. The Sistine Chapel is a part of the Vatican Museums, which is an enormous complex of museums that contain Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek, Roman and Renaissance art. At the end of the museum visit you arrive at the Sistine Chapel. Due to the large size of the museum, you must plan a "minimum" of 2 hours for the visit. It is also important to note that Saint Peter’s Cathedral is separate from the museums so typically a visit to Vatican City is about 4 hours in length.

Many people know about the long lines to get into the Vatican Museums (up to 3 hours in high season). With our private shore trips, we can arrange a VIP entrance so that you avoid the lines. You will arrive at the museum, meet your licensed guide, and after passing security you immediately start your tour.

Special Note- The Vatican has a strict dress code. No bare shoulders, no shorts or dresses above the knee, and no bare midriffs are allowed. Please come prepared or you will be turned away.

Rotterdam Netherlands

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 161px; height: 161px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_TUVGCWc8Zsc/SuiKd1uJyzI/AAAAAAAAAEU/h1LEpdiaoNA/s320/holland_windmills.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397716398645037874" />
In 2008 we introduced private tours in Amsterdam and now we have added tours from the port of Rotterdam. Please read this review from one of our clients this past month.

"One of the very first things that one should admire about a person or a company is integrity. Mr. Steven Hurley and Travel with Friends certainly has that. Not everything goes well all of the time. When my wife and myself had difficulties with a tour in Barcelona, Spain that Mr. Hurley arranged for us, the details were verified and without question or delay the issue was resolved. A few days later, Travel with Friends had arranged another tour for us starting in Monte Carlo. Mr. Hurley went out of his way to assure that this tour went 'without a hitch' - and it did. Thus, via integrity alone, I would recommend Travel with Friends and would use them again." Walter F. The visa they refer to is only for passengers who plan to go ashore unaccompanied by an authorized guide.

All of the tours that we arrange from cruise ships in St. Petersburg include the Visa-Free entry at no additional cost.

For more details, follow this link.

Acropolis Museum has opened in Athens

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 161px; height: 161px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_TUVGCWc8Zsc/SkEzA_elb3I/AAAAAAAAADk/KzgcvgMS3JQ/s320/athens_parthenon_evening.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350613924425592690" />
This week the long awaited New Acropolis Museum has opened in Athens. The museum has been under construction for 11 years and was originally planned to open for the 2004 Olympics. The museum features about 42,000 square feet of exhibition space. Treasures found on the Acropolis are featured and other treasures buried below the ancient Athenian city are visible through the museum’s glass floor. The impressive building itself is worth a visit. If you are going to Athens add it to your list of must sees. The museum is now included on our Best of Athens tour.

Private tours from Gdansk and Gdynia

You asked for it, and now we have it. Clients visiting Gdansk and Gdynia by cruise ship have been asking for a tour which visits the Stutthof Concentration Camp but also includes a visit to the Old Town of Gdansk. You got it, we've added a new 8 hour tour.

The camp became the site for some of the worst atrocities of WWII. Between 1939 and 1945, 127,000 prisoners were officially registered in the camp, HOWEVER those who were immediately singled out for execution were not registered at all, so there is no way of knowing the exact number or people brought to Stutthof. Today the camp is a Memorial. Let us never let something like that happen again.

The Turkish entry VISA requirements

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 161px; height: 161px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_TUVGCWc8Zsc/SWj023FFIBI/AAAAAAAAACI/gSsZwbjQD98/s320/Istanbul_Haghia_Sophia.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5289746985682018322" />
One client asked the following about the Turkish entry VISA:

"I and some family members are doing a cruise with NCL in Oct. Our final stop is Istanbul and we arrive on Sun Nov 1st at noon and have time for sightseeing that afternoon and will stay on the ship that evening. We get off the ship on the 2nd and had planned to stay another night for additional sightseeing and leave on the 3rd. Your website has been an excellent source of information and once we get our ideas together on what we wish to see I will contact you about handling the family. I did notice that a VISA is required if we spend the night on land and it is available at the airport. Might it also be offered at the cruise port for purchase when we get off the ship or must we go to the airport to purchase it?"

Answer- If you plan to stay the night in Turkey (in a hotel) you are required to obtain a Turkish entry VISA. These are not available at the port. Most cruise ships can issue the VISA so you should ask your cruise line before your departure. Otherwise you can obtain it from the Turkish Embassy in USA before departure.

Postal address:
2525 Massachusetts Avenue,
N.W Washington, D.C. 20008

Telephone:+1 202 612 67 00
+1 202 612 67 01
Fax:+1 202 612 67 44

e-Mail: contact@turkishembassy.org

More Info- The Turkish government requires overnight visitors to obtain an entry VISA. However visitors who are visiting the country by cruise ship are exempt from this entry requirement. No entry Visa is required for a shore excursion however an entry Visa is required if your cruise starts in Istanbul. Entry Visas for Americans can be obtained at the airport in Istanbul upon your arrival. The cost is about $25 USD.

Private Venice Transfers

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 161px; height: 161px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_TUVGCWc8Zsc/SWT1BJKphxI/AAAAAAAAAB4/jlf5HAKffko/s320/Venice_Water_Taxi.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5288621262429062930" />
One reader wrote: "I am looking for transfer from Venice (VCE) airport to my hotel and two days later to my cruise ship. This style of meal is one of the 'musts' on any visit to Cyprus. The most simple way to describe it is a large choice of small dishes served family style, sort of like appetizer sized portions. The meal can consist of 20-30 dishes! Locally eat the meal slowly so they can enjoy each others company, have a few drinks and enjoy the different flavors of Cyprus. Typically a meze meal includes breads, cheeses, olives, salads and either a selection of grilled meats and poultry or fish such as calamari. My personal favorite is Halloumi Cheese which is made from a mixture of goat's and sheep's milk. This white cheese has a texture similar to mozzarella, but with a salty flavor. The cheese is often grilled and served warm. If you get the chance, take a taste of Cyprus with a Meze meal.

The Beautiful city of Dubrovnik

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_TUVGCWc8Zsc/SNv3HnbUcNI/AAAAAAAAABw/RYpqO4_W210/s320/Dubrovnik.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250061500845158610" />
Dubrovnik is one of the most attractive cities in the Mediterranean region. In addition to its outstanding natural beauty and well preserved cultural and historical heritage, Dubrovnik also offers high-quality tourist opportunities. The walls of Dubrovnik girdle a perfectly preserved complex of buildings representing all periods of the city’s history, beginning with its founding in the 7th century. Particular mention should be made of the city’s main street, Stradun, the Prince’s Palace, the church of St Vlaho, the Cathedral, three large monasteries, the Custom’s Office and the City Hall. With 2,554 hours of sunshine a year, Dubrovnik ranks among the sunniest towns of southern Europe. In ancient Greek legend, Ge (the Earth) asked one of her sons (Kronos) to mutilate his father (Uranus). To obey his mother, Kronos cut off his father's testicles and throw them into the sea. From the sea a white foam arose, and from this foam came a maiden, named Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty and fertility. She arose at a famous rock, now called the Rock of Aphrodite, a beautiful spot with dramatic views of the sea. Take the tour!

Lunch in Italy

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_TUVGCWc8Zsc/SNZ6YS-nNlI/AAAAAAAAABo/jd6sa-6ggTQ/s320/Food_Deli_Case.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5248516973576795730" />
A nice Lunch in Italy can be a lifetime memory. Knowing what to expect can help you avoid disappointments. Most restaurants have a cover charge. This will be listed somewhere in the menu as pane e coperto (bread and cover). It will be higher for outdoor tables, especially if there is a view, and will be charged whether or not you touch the bread. Don’t quibble over these charges. The tip or servizio is also listed in the menu, and is usually 15-20%. Waiters are paid very well in Italy and it is a well respected profession. If servizio is listed, do not feel that you need to leave any extra money as a tip. However, if the service was exceptional you might leave some change. Take time to enjoy a nice Italian lunch. A sandwich on the go might save you time and a few Euro, but trust me, a nice lunch in Italy can be a lifetime memory.

Meet Your Private Shore Trip Guide

The biggest point of anxiety for many clients is the question, "How will we meet our guide?" When you make a reservation you are asked to provide a client or group name. This name is the contact name that the guide is given. Guides gather at the piers and hold signs with client names much like limo drivers waiting outside of customs at the airport. For large groups the sign is often posted on the windshield of the coach. If at first you don't see your guide, don't panic, be patient in looking as in some ports there may be dozens of private guides meeting clients. It is rare for there to be a problem, but of course, you would also have the phone number of a local contact.

Istanbul- Bosphorus Cruise

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_TUVGCWc8Zsc/SNAReXAO_CI/AAAAAAAAABg/YVfLi_AxZzE/s320/Istanbul_Boat_Tour.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246712779155373090" />
I'm surprised to see how few people take a private boat tour of Istanbul. It is a little expensive (compared to other tours in Istanbul) but it is a great way to see some of the historic Ottoman palaces, wooden mansions and bridges connecting Europe and Asia. Not to mention you get to see how big Istanbul. You cruise for 2 hours (in one direction) and you are still in Istanbul. All the other tours are concentrated in a small part of the city. If you are on a cruise in the Mediterranean, this is all new ground to cover. If you are on a Black Sea Cruise then you will see this part of the Bosphorus. Check it out.

Europe with a wheelchair

Many clients ask us about tours with guests in wheelchairs. In most of our tour descriptions we mention that the tour is not wheelchair accessible. European towns and cities are not as accessible as those States. Also, many sites visited are ancient ruins without accessibility. However, if you are traveling with a guest who uses a wheelchair, please let us know, so we can advise you on what we can arrange. The larger issue is the fact that the vehicles and coaches are not designed for wheelchairs. So in most cases, if a limited mobility guest can stand and walk enough to board a coach or get in and out of a vehicle, then chances are we can arrange a special driving tour with photo stops for you. Please ask.

French Riviera- Off the Beaten Path

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_TUVGCWc8Zsc/SM060b2zKzI/AAAAAAAAABU/NTGuAB3gsfQ/s320/Riviera_Gourdon.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245913813461707570" />
Many people have taken Mediterranean cruises which stop in the French Riviera. So maybe you've seen the main highlights. If you are going back, consider a visit to the Loup Region, which sits in the foothills of the Alps. The area offers stunning views of the mountains and the sea in the distance. You will see dramatic waterfalls and visit hilltop towns such as Gourdon which is perched on a hilltop. My favorite is a stop at the Florian Candy Factory. You'll learn how the areas flowers are also used to make delicious candies, jams, chocolates and the Provençal favorite, nougat. These things are featured on the Provençal Hilltop Towns tour which is rarely chosen by first time visitors, but well worth it. This tour is available from Villefranche, Nice, Monte Carlo, Monaco and Cannes

Athens- Acropolis climb

Good information about the Acropolis. My advice is to go for it if you can climb stairs at home, and if you are a bit unsure just ask a friend to go slowly with you as you take their arm. There are places to rest along the way, and the top is absolutely wonderful.

Athens- Getting to the Acropolis

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_TUVGCWc8Zsc/SMv5L5ZRAtI/AAAAAAAAABE/7OORx6xyfio/s320/Acropolis.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245560173783745234" />
Many people ask how difficult it is to walk up to the Acropolis, or if visitors with limited mobility can make it. It is about a 10 minute uphill walk which is sometimes very steep. As you reach the Beulé Gate (original entrance) you then climb a series of steep stone stairs which are often uneven and slick. This leads you to the new (437 BC)entrance called the Propylaia. Once you are on top of the Acropolis there are not designated walking paths and the surface is rocky and uneven. In the summer months it is also very crowded and hot, so please bring water. A visit takes about two hours. If you are taking a private tour and have someone who cannot make this trek, then we can suggest a nice cafe where they can enjoy a tremendous view while the others enjoy the visit.
